Why run in Gulu?

A certified course with a road to Cape Town

Running for culture and heritage

Gulu balances modern city life with deep Acholi traditions. Minutes from the start line you pass grass-thatched homesteads, the Central Market and the neighbourhoods that rebuilt this city. Ten percent of race proceeds fund the Martin Aliker Youth Skilling Centre in Abole.

World Athletics

Certified course

The route is measured and certified, so your finish time counts.

Two Oceans Marathon

Official qualifier

Your Gulu finish can earn you a place at the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town.

What runners are saying

The Gulu City Marathon became more than a race for me

I joined the 2025 race to prove to myself that I could overcome fear and self-doubt. Training was not easy — there were days I wanted to quit.

What makes Gulu unique

Gulu is one of Uganda's hidden gems, rich in culture, food, warm people and breathtaking terrain. Minutes from the centre you see grass-thatched homesteads.

Bonita Mulelengi

I wasn't a serious runner

Forty-two kilometres is a completely different conversation. I signed up anyway, because I needed to know what would happen if I pushed into territory that scared me.

More than a race

I ran with the Fast & Furious Running Club's end-of-year run to Gulu, which grew into this marathon. Coming back was my way of honouring that history.
